What about social and emotional risks?
Imagine the experiences of speaking your truth even when your voice is shaking, asking questions, and finding your voice. All of those require taking risks.
Clients often reveal their reluctance to speak up in meetings. Asking a question might be perceived of as disagreeing or starting an argument. Having an idea might mean you are then charged with making it happen.
Speaking your truth might mean you will stand alone, be rejected or ostracized.
I have had several experiences of speaking my truth, standing alone in the moment in front of many others, only to have people come to me privately later and thank me. My question back then was, “Where were you?”
During the most recent Leadership in the Elements retreat I led, every participant set an intention to build more confidence in their leadership by finding their voice. I was surprised not only by how all of them chose this, but by the quality of leaders they already were. Each one of them felt a lack of confidence speaking their truth.
I am learning there is a big difference between standing your ground, knowing what you know, and being a rebel or warrior. Who we are being is much louder than what we are saying. Who the speaker is being in the moment will impact how the message is received.
Check your inner state. Check in with the energy behind your words. Look for clarity, openness, curiosity, and receptivity. Those energies allow for opportunities to dialogue and explore. If you feel insistent, forceful, or a need to convince; those create resistance.
Play with it. Consciously shift your energy by going inside, noticing your energy, and bringing another way of being to your awareness. Choose by adopting a new posture; sit back, breathe deeply, open up, be curious. Notice what happens when you shift your body and see if your mind shifts.
Multiple perspectives are where possibilities exist. Engage with diverse perspectives and perceptions. Take the risk of allowing the energy of total curiosity to lead the way.
