When I work with successful leaders I ask them how they have learned to be effective and make the positive difference they make. A typical response often includes phrases such as; I trust my gut, I listen to my inner voice, I use my instincts, I read the patterns, and somehow I just know what’s next, it shows itself. All of these are versions of using intuition as a leadership skill.
Intuition used to be viewed as too out there to take seriously. We now have research and information on our inner knowing that show us it is real, we can develop it intentionally, and we have access to much more than our 5 senses.
Lynn A. Robinson says in her book, Trust Your Gut, How the Power of Intuition Can Grow Your Business, that there are two schools of thought about the origin of intuition; synthesis of prior knowledge, and a Higher Power or Divine Intelligence, “compass of the soul”, that guides, informs, and directs us. Regardless of which you resonate with, it exists, is available to access , use and develop, and can be a powerful tool as we lead our lives and lead others.
Several years ago I hosted 4 groups of women who were interested in exploring intuition. We began as a class. I “taught” intuition. We began with the agreement to meet for 6 weeks, read, learn, do exercises, practice using our intuition and play together. Today, 5 years later, two of the groups still exist and meet regularly. I am no longer in the role of teacher, it has become a shared experience where we all come willing to bring new information, exercises, and experiences to share.
As our culture continues to de-mystify our sixth sense, and we continue to discover many ways of knowing, I am more optimistic than ever. I believe we as a species are beginning to evolve to embrace multiple intelligences as important. We are more connected than ever and more empathetic to others around the world because we have direct access to each other, and we care.
I experience my own intuition as little ‘hits’ of knowing. Sometimes it is a voice, more often an image/metaphor, and I also notice signs and the magic of synchronicities every day. When I remember to pay attention and really notice, it is happening all the time. It takes practice, and it becomes stronger as I become more intentional with it.
What is your experience? I would love to hear from you, share this, share your experience with us, let’s all learn more together.
